A short tour of the surrounding area...
Saint-Florent-sur-Auzonnet, a village of about 1200 people, where a small river flows through the lush valley of the Auzonnet, it has its source 12 kilometers upstream in the commune of Portes, where its fortified castle in the shape of ships, dating from the 11th century, is located.
Our little village is nestled just 40 kilometers from the Mas de la Barque ski slopes and 80 kilometers from the Mediterranean beaches. Autumn is a wonderful time for mushroom enthusiasts, who head out into the undergrowth to search for the famous Boletus, the Cévennes cep. A treasure for gourmets, its aroma alone elevates a simple omelet and transforms a meal into a warm and convivial occasion...
The altitude reaches a minimum of 250 meters, a very varied vegetation covers the land, established on three types of rock (granite, schist, limestone) it includes a diverse flora with a thousand scents: Thyme, rosemary, broom, holm and white oaks, junipers, and not forgetting the king of the mountain, the chestnut tree. Its queen, the chestnut, already consumed in the Middle Ages in the valleys of Gard and Lozère, allowed the inhabitants of the Cévennes to avoid many periods of famine, hence its name at the time: "the bread tree".
Speaking of bread, the village baker works through the night to delight our taste buds, making traditional organic bread, sold by weight just like in the old days. And how can anyone resist her shop window overflowing with pastries and other treats? Her shelves also feature local products: beers, jams, fresh eggs...
La Caracole, located at the entrance to the village, is a farm-inn producing snails, which enthusiasts can taste on site.
